Cebu coastline at golden hour with traditional bancas

A Local's Field Guide · October 2026

The Cebu the postcards forgot.

Beyond the whale sharks and the resort brochures - a quieter island of coral-stone churches, misty peaks, night markets that smell of smoke and lemongrass, and people who greet you with salamat.

Hidden Gems

Six places locals send only the friends they truly like.

Skip the tour-bus itinerary. These are the corners of Cebu that reward a slower pace and a rented car.

Sirao Flower Farm

Sirao Flower Farm

01

Busay Highlands · 45 min from the city · see-RAH-oh

Rows of celosia burn pink, orange and gold along a ridge above Cebu City - a quiet farm the locals call 'Little Amsterdam'. Cool air, cloud shadows, and the sound of the wind moving through the flowers.

Local tip · Go at 6:30 AM before the tour vans arrive. Pair with Temple of Leah on the drive down.

Osmeña Peak

Osmeña Peak

02

Dalaguete · 2.5 hrs south · os-MEN-ya

The highest point in Cebu, a spine of jagged limestone hills that locals compare to a dragon's back. A gentle 20-minute hike from the trailhead ends in one of the most cinematic sunrises in the Visayas.

Local tip · Sleep in a farmhouse homestay the night before. Bring a light jacket - it drops to 18°C.

Boljoon Heritage Church

Boljoon Heritage Church

03

Boljoon · Southern coast · bol-HOON

A 1783 coral-stone fortress-church, quietly restored, still smelling of candle wax and sea salt. A UNESCO tentative site that most travelers speed past on the way to Oslob.

Local tip · Combine with the pastel houses of Argao and a slow lunch of torta and sikwate (native chocolate).

Aguinid

Aguinid Falls

04

Samboan · Deep south · ah-gee-NID

Five tiered cascades over travertine terraces you climb up, not just look at. Barangay guides walk with you barefoot, showing where to grip the calcified rock. Cool, quiet, and largely off the tourist trail.

Local tip · Ask your guide about the hidden 6th tier - a natural chapel the locals rarely show.

Kawit

Kawit Island & Alegria

05

Southwest coast

Skip Moalboal's crowds. The reef between Kawit Island and Alegria has the same sardine run, half the boats, and fisherfolk who still sail bancas home at dusk.

Local tip · Hire a bangka from Barangay Poblacion at first light - around ₱1,500 for the morning.

Simala

Simala Shrine

06

Sibonga · 1.5 hrs south

A castle-like Marian shrine that rises out of sugarcane fields. Whether or not you're religious, the devotion of the pilgrims and the hand-written letters left at the altar are deeply moving.

Local tip · Wednesdays and Sundays are miracle days - go on a weekday morning for quiet.

Cebu night market with lanterns and BBQ smoke

Markets & Nights

Where Cebu smells like lemongrass, salt and woodsmoke.

The scent of Cebu

Taboan Public Market

The city's dried-fish quarter. Danggit, pusit, and dried mangoes stacked by the kilo. Locals come here before every trip abroad to bring home a taste of the island.

Cebu's oldest

Carbon Market

A sprawling, honest, pre-dawn produce market. Freshly-restored heritage arcades meet farmers from the highlands unloading tomatoes and native chickens by lantern light.

IT Park nights

Sugbo Mercado

A weekend night market where young Cebuano chefs test new ideas - coconut lechon tacos, ube soft-serve, craft calamansi sodas. Loud, warm, joyful.

Smoke and spice

Larsian sa Fuente

A cathedral of pork BBQ, chicken inasal and puso rice under one tin roof. Grab a plastic stool, order by pointing, eat with your hands. This is Cebu at dinner.

Small Plates, Big Legacy

Eight bites that tell you exactly where you are.

Cebuano food is unfussy and generous - the taste of a family island that has cooked for sailors, traders and pilgrims for five centuries.

  • 01

    Lechon Cebu

Stuffed with lemongrass, tanglad and salt. No sauce needed.

  • 02

    Puso

Rice woven inside a coconut leaf pouch - the utensil is the plate.

  • 03

    Ngohiong

    Cebu's five-spice spring roll, a Chinese-Cebuano love letter.

  • 04

    Chorizo de Cebu

Sweet-garlicky sausage, best with vinegar and hot rice.

  • 05

    Budbud Kabog

Millet suman from Dalaguete, unwrapped from banana leaf.

  • 06

    Sutukil

Sugba–Tula–Kilaw - three ways to cook one just-caught fish.

  • 07

    Masareal

Chewy peanut brick from Mandaue. A merienda from grandmothers.

  • 08

    Dried Mangoes

    Cebu's most-exported sweet. Chewy, sun-gold, faintly tart.

Travel With Grace

A short vocabulary for treating Cebu the way Cebu treats you.

Salamat

Thank you

Say it. Say it often. Cebuanos are famously warm - a soft 'salamat' goes further than a peso tip.

Ma'am / Sir

A term of care

Not corporate stiffness - a genuine mark of respect used by children, elders, and everyone in between.

Sinulog

The dance of the current

Cebu's Santo Niño devotion runs 500 years deep. Speak of it with reverence, even outside the January festival.

Padayon

Carry on, with grace

A quiet Cebuano philosophy - resilience without noise. You'll feel it in every jeepney, every fisherman, every host.
